Regional Chancellor at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Campus

Dr. Karen Holbrook is the true epitome of a Renaissance woman. Now Regional Chancellor of the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus, Holbrook began working at USF in an interim role. Despite plans to retire, which she had promised her husband several times over the years, she decided to accept an official offer for the position in 2018.

Her illustrious career was born in high school, thanks to “a great biology teacher” who inspired Holbrook to pursue her strongest interest, science, as her major in college. She has held prestigious positions at universities nationwide and served on the boards of more than a dozen national and global organizations supporting science, technology, research, medical education, and more. Along the way, Karen has earned multiple degrees, including a doctorate in biological structure at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Of all the places she has worked, she finds Sarasota to be among the best. She describes it as a fabulous community, with “people who care and give their time and themselves to make things happen for other people, so makes it a great place to live and to work.”

Holbrook notes the many roles she has held at different universities. “I’ve been a president, provost, dean, graduate dean, and this is one of the most fun places I’ve been. I am thoroughly enjoying my time at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. It’s a small campus where everyone knows and cares about each other.”

Among her goals at USF is to add an Integrated Science Technology and Arts Complex, a student center, and resident hall. She says, “I’m excited about what our future can bring here and we’re working hard to make these things happen. The connection with our community is paramount with student success as our first and foremost goal.”
