Van Wezel Foundation & City of Sarasota Proposed Partnership

By  |

March 11, 2022 – Sarasota

On March 21, 2022, the city commission will be asked to approve this partnership agreement between the Foundation and the City for the development of the Sarasota Performing Arts Center.

A statement regarding the partnership agreement, attributable to Foundation CEO Cheryl Mendelson, can be found below, and a fact sheet for background information is attached.

“The Van Wezel Foundation’s philanthropic purpose has deep roots in the rich cultural history of Sarasota. More than 30 years ago, we entered into a cultural partnership with the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall through its owner, the city of Sarasota.

“The Hall has served as a beloved performing arts center for over half a century – a home to international creative experiences and a springboard for the Foundation’s educational collaborations, serving more than 58,000 students, teachers and families annually.

“When the city of Sarasota committed to a new master plan to develop 53 acres on the Bayfront into a vibrant park, with a performing arts center at the heart of it on September 6, 2018, the Foundation committed to a new era of partnership with the city.

“Now, the Foundation is ready to take the next steps in solidifying that partnership and realizing the dream of a contemporary, iconic performing arts center for our community that will serve generations to come.

“On behalf of the Foundation and its board of directors, we look forward to presenting the proposed partnership agreement at the upcoming commission meeting on March 21, 2022, and humbly ask for the commissioners’ favorable support.

“Together, with the city, we will create a place for ideas, the arts, YOU”
