The Ringling Is Recruiting Volunteer Docents

By  |

The Ringling is currently seeking individuals for their next Docent training opportunity, beginning March 2020 and running until February 2021. Training will focus on the Museum of Art and classes meet once a week on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Docents at The Ringling love to learn and love sharing what they have learned by engaging visitors in active discussions about the museum’s collection. The training course is comprehensive and includes extensive content-based lectures as well as training on effective touring techniques. Docents must be committed to making an investment of time, passion, energy and enthusiasm! They are required to dedicate at least 75 hours annually, including tours, trainings and meetings.

Hollie Corbitt, The Ringling’s Volunteer Program Coordinator, says “Volunteers need not be concerned if they know very little about art, history or museums in general. The training course is comprehensive and includes content-based lectures as well as training on effective touring techniques. Ideal candidates for this volunteer opportunity are lifelong learners who enjoy sharing knowledge with people from all over the world. Our docents range in age from 33-92, so this opportunity appeals to a wide variety of people.”

Docents receive some special perks that include a 25 percent discount on museum membership and 2 volunteer appreciation events per year.

Future docents need to apply by Nov. 8. In addition to filling out an online application, they will need to supply a resume’ and a letter of interest explaining why the position appeals to them.
