SCF Names Student Employees of the Year

By  |

Two student employees at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) who have demonstrated a passion for helping others are SCF’s 2020 Student Employees of the Year.

SCF Bradenton has selected Josue Lugo, an algebra tutor with the Tampa Bay Bridge to Baccalaureate (B2B) program, and SCF Venice has selected Jennifer Dolan, a peer advising assistant.

Lugo works with the B2B program, designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority students completing a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field. “Josue is an exceptional problem-solver,” said B2B’s Student Success Coordinator Linette Victor. “His affable personality and overall presence as a central unit within the program has helped pull all the students together,” she said. “Josue sets the tone and example for the program.”

Dolan guides students through orientation, degree and program entry requirements and contributes to students’ success. “Jennifer goes above and beyond when attending to students’ needs,” said advisor Mark Menezes, who nominated Dolan for the award. “Students know that when they meet with Jennifer, they are respected, valued, heard and that they matter. I rely on Jennifer to set an example for new hires.”

The award is part of National Student Employee Appreciation Week, April 13-17.

Other nominees were:
Alejandro Diaz – Bradenton Library & Learning Center
Alexia Setzer – Bradenton Library & Learning Center
Anna Tillis – Bradenton Academic Resource Center
Cecile Albert – Venice Academic Resource Center
Chad Ridler – Lakewood Ranch Information Technology
Jennifer Blackburn – Venice Student Life
Rut Maradiaga – Bradenton Business and Technology Program
Wilginie Orelus – Bradenton College & Career Planning

Each student nominated for the honor received a gift of appreciation and certificate of achievement.
Student employee supervisors made nominations for Student Employee of the Year. All nominees had at least six months of employment and a minimum GPA of 2.5. A review committee evaluated the students on attributes, expectations, leadership, style and impact. Lugo and Dolan’s nominations will be sent to the Southern Association of Student Employment Administrators to be judged on a regional level. The regional winner is sent to the National Association of Student Employment Administrators to be considered for a national award.

Student employment offers participants the ability to develop skills relevant in any career and be better prepared for the job market upon graduation. Many students can cover a significant portion of their college expenses through this program.
