March 13, 2024 – Sarasota

Sarasota Orchestra showcases a variety of performances showcasing pianist Joyce Yang, soul powerhouse Capathia Jenkins and Sarasota Orchestra Concertmaster Daniel Jordan. The Masterworks series continues to underscore music’s great composers, while the Great Escapes series features the sumptuous music of Egypt, Polynesia and beyond. The Pops series treats listeners to a big dose of soul-filled nostalgia.

Masterworks: Yang Plays Mozart

Pianist Joyce Yang, a favorite of Sarasota audiences, returns to Sarasota Orchestra as the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24. One of Mozart’s most striking concertos, the work rolls with a stormy turbulence. Yang is joined by Austrian conductor Katharina Wincor, who makes her Sarasota Orchestra debut. The program also features a work composed by Sarasota native, Roger Zare, called NEOWISE, named after the comet that flared across the sky in 2020. Closing the program is Dvořák’s popular Symphony No. 8, a tribute to the composer’s beloved Bohemia translated into sonic terrain filled with birdsong, rustling leaves and folk dances.

A pianist with “[an] enormous palette of colors, and tremendous emotional depth” (Milwaukee Sentinel Journal), Joyce Yang captivates audiences with her virtuosity, lyricism and interpretive sensitivity. Austrian conductor Katharina Wincor is a force on the podium and is quickly establishing an international reputation.
