Sarasota Contemporary Dance Presents its Final In- Studio Performance and Behind the Curtain of the Summer Season

By  |

June 25, 2021 – Sarasota

This summer, Sarasota Contemporary Dance will be filled with a variety of opportunities for the community to experience live performances during the weeks of our Summer Intensive Programs. All performances will be located at our home studio with In-Person and Virtual Streaming available. Each summer intensive will be debuting unique performances to the Sarasota community, showcasing works by company members, guest choreographers, and emerging artists.

To begin each summer intensive, we’ll kick it off with a showing from our In-Studio Performance Series, which includes works choreographed by nationally renowned artists. For our July Summer Intensive, the In-Studio Performance will be a solo work created by Christal Brown titled What We Ask Of Flesh. Halfway through our intensive, we will be bringing back Behind the Curtain, an experience for our donors and patrons to view the company’s works in-progress as well as the opportunity to give the company their own feedback on the work. For this July’s Behind the Curtain, Christal Brown will also be presenting her work in progress for a piece she will be setting on SCD for Dance Makers 2022.

Christal Brown is the Founder of INSPIRIT and Project:BECOMING, the creator of the Liquid Strength training module for dance, an Associate Professor of Dance at Middlebury College and the CVO of Steps and Stages Coaching, LLC. Brown received a BFA in Dance and a minor in Business from UNCG and her MFA in New Media Art and Technology from LIU. Brown is a native of Kinston, NC where while serving as her mother’s sidekick, she learned the mechanisms of cultural organizing and the organic synthesis of art and activism. Her path of self-discovery has been influenced by trailblazers such as Chuck Davis, Bill T. Jones, Andrea E. Woods, Liz Lerman, Bebe Miller, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. Brown is a mover and a warrior of change and transformation. Brown combines her athleticism, creativity, love for people, and passion for teaching to create works that redefine the art of dance, the creation of identity and structures of power.
