To help community members learn more about resources available to job-seekers, and expose youths to potential careers and job and volunteer opportunities, Safe Children Coalition’s (SCC) Achievers and HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) programs recently held the World of Work Career Expo & Job Fair. The event, which took place at the Robert Taylor Community Complex in north Sarasota, was attended by several hundred program participants.

Numerous community organizations and employers shared information about career resources, offered hands-on activities, answered questions about jobs and careers, shared information about summer jobs and volunteer opportunities, gave inside tips on what employers are looking for, and shared recommendations regarding education and training to help prepare attendees for gainful employment in the present and future.

For younger guests, the National Council of Jewish Women provided arts and crafts activities and storytelling. Children also made Easter baskets.

While the event focused on the teen participants in Safe Children Coalition’s Achievers program and parents/caretakers involved in its HIPPY program, members of the general community were in attendance as well. This was the fifth year that SCC has offered this event.

“We strive to provide valuable resources and encouragement to our Achievers participants and HIPPY parents to set and achieve goals in both their educational and personal lives,” said program manager Jone Williams. “Our World of Work event helps to expose our program participants to what’s out there and what they need to do to prepare themselves as well as to assist local residents who are seeking a new job or career change. We are thrilled at the turnout and are looking forward to next year’s event!”
