December 30, 2020 – Sarasota

As many continue to struggle with the changes to everyday life in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, JFCS of the Suncoast will offer a weekly online discussion group to help participants deal with the effects of “the new normal.” Hosted on Zoom, the sessions will be based on author Nancy Schlossberg’s book Overwhelmed: Coping with Life’s Ups and Downs and co-led by Schlossberg and retired attorney Michael Karp each Thursday beginning January 7, 2021, from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. The book is not required for the sessions but is available through Nancy’s website, www.transitionsthroughlife.com.

A professor emerita of counseling psychology at the University of Maryland who is often quoted in national news stories, Dr. Schlossberg is considered an expert on life transitions and has written ten books on the topic. Michael Karp is a retired civil law trial attorney who has devoted himself to learning more about the importance of socialization and staying connected during thpandemic. Both are longtime Sarasota residents.

Schlossberg notes, “Though not a therapy group, it will be therapeutic as we gather together to share common interests and concerns.”

JFCS will not charge for the sessions, which are open to all. To register or for information, contact Pam Baron at (941) 366-2224 ext. 112 or pbaron@jfcs- cares.org.

“JFCS is deeply sympathetic to the effect on people in our community of the tremendous recent changes in how we live our daily lives,” says Arthur Lerman, JFCS Interim President/CEO. “After providing more than $500,000 in financial aid thanks to our generous donors, we are now seeking approaches to help with other consequences of the pandemic. This group is just one of the ways we hope to offer some emotional and psychological relief.”
