In a harmonious fusion of artistry and honor, the Galleries and Exhibitions Department of Ringling College of Art + Design, in collaboration with the Ringling College Veteran’s Club, proudly presents the much-awaited fourth annual “War Paint: Profiles in Courage” art exhibit. As the weather cools and autumn arrives in Sarasota, this event will once again grace the college’s hallowed halls, bringing together a kaleidoscope of artistic masterpieces that showcase the heroes of our nation.

Set against the backdrop of Ringling College’s artistic prowess, this exhibition casts a spotlight on a unique collaboration between students, faculty, and veterans. “War Paint” offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of Veterans. This dynamic portrayal allows viewers to forge a connection beyond the surface, to peer into the eyes of those who have contributed to the intricate mosaic that is America’s identity. From World War II to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and even the current enlisted troops, the exhibition weaves together stories that span generations and conflicts.

Each brushstroke whispers untold stories, each color hue carries the weight of history, and every portrait breathes life into the stories. Stepping into this creative haven is an invitation to engage with the faces that have shaped our nation’s narrative, to understand the contours of courage, and to salute the individuals who have walked the path of service.

In a world that sometimes feels fragmented, this artistic endeavor unites the threads of the community, forging a connection between Veteran, artist, and admirer.

Beyond the captivating strokes of brilliance, “War Paint” echoes the spirit of artistic evolution. Just as the artists push the boundaries of their creativity, the exhibit itself evolves with each passing year, welcoming fresh talent and new perspectives. With each successive iteration, it cements its place as a quintessential event in the Sarasota art scene. “War Paint” stands tall as a testament and celebration of those who have served and sacrificed in the United States Military. At the illustrious world of Ringling College, this enchanting spectacle is more than just an exhibit—it’s an artistic march in the boots of our nation’s heroes.

From November 6 to December 8, 2023, the Selby Gallery, nestled within the heart of Ringling College, will host this remarkable exhibition. The gallery doors swing open for in-person viewings, extending an open invitation to the public from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free, a gesture of gratitude from Ringling College to the community that fosters and cherishes artistic expression. It’s a chance to stand face-to-face with history, explore the complexities of service, and witness the power of art to narrate the untold.

The 2023 War Paint: Profiles of Courage Exhibition is curated by Tim Jaeger, Director and Chief Curator, and student curator, John Quigley (Class of 2025, Illustration). Along with the Veteran’s Club, they have created an experience that immerses visitors in the blended realms of military service and art. Visitors become both spectators and participants, invited to engage and introspect.
