Child Advocate at All Star Children’s Foundation

Love makes Graci McGillicuddy’s world go ‘round. Although well known for her enthusiasm and passion, it’s her humanity that is most impressive. Throughout her life she has striven to make people feel better, especially the children she has cared for and protected for more than 35 years

She has just completed a $17 million capital campaign funding the All Star Children’s Foundation’s Campus of Hope and Healing for abused and neglected children in foster care. The Campus is comprised of a 13,000 square foot pediatric mental health and treatment center, six family-style licensed foster homes, a multi-purposed clubhouse, inspirational green space with a playground, vegetable and butterfly gardens and more!

The mission of All Star is to create a brighter future for children in foster care through innovation, science and compassion. Focusing on healing the adverse effects of early childhood trauma, All Star has developed 6 core programs and a rigorous research program that will not only allow the children in All Star’s care to lead healthy and productive lives but will also serve as models that can be replicated throughout Florida and the nation.

“I love my life,” Graci says. “Helping our kids, making their lives safer and better, has been so rewarding and given my life purpose.

The center has been a lifelong dream, and a dream embraced by generous donors. “So many people have made this happen, says McGillicuddy. “When you walk into the building you can feel the love. It’s palpable.”

McGillicuddy has been there all along during the construction. When workers on the site found out the buildings were for children who have been abused, they began to share their own traumatic experiences.

“They began to tell me their stories,” McGillicuddy says. “I told them they were part of something very special, and they should put all the love they didn’t receive into the building.”

It all comes back to love. “We have to love our kids and believe in them,” McGillicuddy says. “There is no limit to what they can do or be. If they have love and support, they can handle anything.”
