July 12, 2021 – Sarasota

Art Center Sarasota’s 2021 exhibition season continues with “Here Comes the Sun,” a juried exhibition showcasing the wide-ranging talents of regional artists, July 23-August 20. An opening reception will take place on Friday, July 23, 6-8 p.m. The juror is Tampa-based artist and first-place recipient of the Kennedy Center’s 2020 VSA Emerging Artists Award, Savannah Magnolia. Art Center Sarasota is located at 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For information, visit www.artsarasota.org or call 941-365-2032.

According to Andrew Long, Art Center Sarasota’s exhibition coordinator, “Here Comes the Sun” gives area residents and visitors a chance to see outstanding works by area-based artists—as well as art by artists from outside our tri-county region.

“By staging this exhibition in the summer months, we’re able to create cultural opportunities for tourists and year-round residents during a time when there are less arts and cultural events happening in our area,” says Long. He encourages regional artists to submit works, adding that each artist can submit up to three works for jurying. All accepted work will be on display and for sale at the center. Winning artists receive $800 for first prize; $600 for second prize; $400 for third prize; $100 for merit awards; and $50 for special recognitions. “Here Comes the Sun” is funded, in part, by Sarasota County Tourist Development Tax revenues, Florida Department of State—Division of Cultural Affairs, Arts Axis Florida, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, The Patterson Foundation, The Isermann Family Foundation, Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County and Art & Frame of Sarasota.

Juror Savannah Magnolia (b. 1996) lives and works in Tampa. She graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design with a BFA and is the first-place recipient of the Kennedy Center’s 2019-2020 VSA Emerging Artists Award. Magnolia’s work is currently part of the “Skyway” exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg (through August 22).  This spring, ACS presented Magnolia’s solo exhibition “Micro & Macro,” and her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions around the region and the country.
