Voices – Rising Choreographers Kicks Off SCD’s 16th Season
September 22, 2021 – Sarasota
Sarasota Contemporary Dance is thrilled to be back onstage with their 16th Season: GRIT. Opening the season, Voices – Rising Choreographers will showcase a variety of works from SCD Company Members and guest artists, selected by Artistic Director Leymis Bolaños Wilmott during SCD’s 2021 Summer Intensives. The chosen works in Voices – Rising Choreographers not only showcase the strength, charm, and diversity of the company, but also to fulfill SCD’s mission of presenting a range of high-caliber contemporary dance for its audience.
Voices – Rising Choreographers will feature works from SCD Company Members Jessica Obiedzinski and Sea Lee, along with Miami-based artist Justice Rodriguez. These three rising voices have been working closely with SCD to deliver a diverse and thoughtful selection of pieces for this performance. These works include Bird Girl (Jessica Obiedzinski), that’s not the punch line (Sea Lee) and tu me quieres? no, yo te amo (Justice Rodriguez).
“I can’t begin to explain how much it means to me to be invited back to Sarasota Contemporary dance to expand on this piece,” says Justice Rodriguez, Miami-based choreographer. “SCD has always had a special place in my heart, and to be given space and opportunity to express myself has been gratifying, and most importantly, humbling.” On his work and tu me quieres? no, yo te amo, Justice notes: “This piece has been a work in progress for about two years now and has evolved greatly, capturing personal experiences that have shifted my own perspective on relationships, the connections I have to love, and embracing all facets of the human experience.”
To feature a variety of voices for this performance, SCD is also thrilled to present SCD Ensemble (SCDE) performing as the opening act of Voices. SCDE is a training company for aspiring dancers with the mission to offer students high caliber contemporary dance training, opportunities to perform alongside professional dancers, and preparation for a future professional career in dance. SCDE associate director Xiao-Xuan Dancigers will be presenting a re-work of her piece The Delightful Mix as the opener of Voices. Originally set on New College students, Xiao-Xuan has continued to build on this work to highlight the ensemble dancers and their creative abilities.
