To Virginia Shearer, becoming executive director of Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design in August 2021 felt like a homecoming and natural next step.

“I’m energized by the opportunity to help shepherd this young institution during a crucial period of growth and integration,” says Shearer, who comes to this role after 16 years as a senior executive overseeing education, interpretation, and public programs at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Previously, she served as deputy director of education and public programs at the Tampa Museum of Art and as education director at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art from 1997 to 2003. “I’ve always had a fondness for Sarasota and admired the city’s steadfast commitment to the arts,” she says.

“Our goal is to establish a strong reputation as a vital and vibrant institution, build a dynamic slate of exhibitions and public programs, and cement the Museum’s position as one of the main pillars of Sarasota’s arts and cultural community.”  

Her vision for the Museum and its campus is to create a stimulating and welcoming environment for all members of our community and visitors alike, and especially for those who are art curious. “The Museum’s Founders, Trustees, and inaugural leadership created an exceptional space and programming,” she notes, “I am honored to take the reins and build upon the foundation they created.”

Shearer is poised and ready to offer her vision and strong leadership at a pivotal time for the Museum. “I’m focused on growing and expanding our audience so that the Museum remains relevant and is reflective of our ever-changing, diverse community here in Sarasota,” Shearer explains. “Connecting to others through their art and creativity really resonates for people coming here to the Museum and reminds us of how interconnected we are.”
