The Education Foundation of Sarasota County (EFSC), in partnership with the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, announced that three Sarasota County students have been selected for the In-Demand Careers Scholars Program.
The students, all rising seniors in the Class of 2020, will receive a Florida Prepaid scholarship that covers tuition for two years at a Florida public college. In addition, they will receive college and career preparation through the EFSC Student Success Center at their school and continued advocate support through college graduation and entry into the workforce.
The selected students are Samantha Haley and Colin Stevens from North Port High School and Izabela Tapia from Riverview High School.
“We are pleased for these students who underwent a rigorous application process and demonstrated their eligibility to participate in this new avenue for postsecondary education,” said EFSC President Jennifer Vigne.
The program’s goal is to develop a trained workforce with entrepreneurial skills to be competitive to enter high-demand career fields in Florida.
To be eligible, students are required to have good grades, attendance and behavior; be participating in Career Technical Education (CTE) courses that include early childhood education, nursing, engineering or business-related tracks; and aspire to obtain a college degree or certificate in Florida with an entrepreneurship focus.
In addition to the three Sarasota County students selected for the pilot program’s second year, a fourth student, Jennifer Trejo, is supported by Champions for Learning, Collier County’s education foundation.
“We’re excited to continue to expand this opportunity to students in Collier, Lee and Sarasota counties. These students have great ambitions, and we look forward to celebrating their future accomplishments,” said Cynthia O’Connell, director of the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.
