Suncoast Black Arts Collaborative’s (SBAC) “Beyond Regional Boundaries” initiative continues its powerful exploration of Black artistry with “Evoking Conversations of Historical Events, Current Issues and Race,” a thought-provoking

exhibition by photographer Lily Evans, January 22 through February 28, at WSLR + Fogartyville, 525 Kumquat Court, Sarasota. An opening reception, with the artist, is February 4, 5-7 p.m.

According to SBAC Executive Director Michéle des Verney Redwine, this exhibit will “challenge, inspire, and provoke essential conversations on race and society.” She adds that Evans’ art “bridges history and modern struggles, using symbolism and vivid narratives to spark dialogue on race, identity, and resilience. It invites viewers to reflect on both personal and collective experiences of race in America.”

This exhibition is a key component of the Art Innovation Zone, a yearlong program within SBAC’s Beyond Regional Boundaries initiative. Supported by regional venues like WSLR + Fogartyville, the program fosters a creative environment where artists like Lily Evans can illuminate the complexities of race, history, and cultural identity.

Lily Evans uses photography to spark conversations about historical events, current issues, and race. Her street photography captures moments that pique her curiosity, often followed by conversations or research to uncover deeper truths. Through her work, Evans connects her subjects to acts of heroism and historical events, showcasing the resilience and humanity of her subjects. Her mission is to reveal profound truths through the lens of her camera. “Black history is not only from the past, but an ongoing struggle documented by the portraits of the present,” says Evans. “The ancestors are called upon to give guidance, knowledge and strength and to unify the viewership of this exhibition and the sharing of truth.” Visit www.capturedbylily.net.

“Hosting this exhibition beautifully aligns with the WSLR+Fogartyville mission to amplify the voices of our diverse community,” says Ariel Aparicio-Jerro, director of

Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center. He explains that Fogartyville is in Sarasota’s Rosemary District, once known as Overtown and the first Black community in Sarasota County. “We are honored to introduce our Fogartyville audiences to the impactful work of this Florida-based artist, whose photography holds up a mirror to history and culture.”

Suncoast Black Arts Collaborative is also showcasing “Interpretations, Perceptions & Realities,” an exhibition featuring works by Gwendolyn Aqui-Brooks, Dwight Rose, and Allen Pettigrew. This exhibit is on view through February 25 at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, 502 3rd Avenue West, Bradenton. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 13, from 3-5 p.m.
