When Tatiana Twarowski and her husband, Greg, founded Carats in 2013, she quickly discovered that the jewelry business is very fulfilling. She says, “It’s rewarding because we celebrate life with our clients.” 

With a master’s degree in accounting, Tatiana participates in all facets of this family company, from creating financial reports to meeting with clients. “It’s just amazing when a gentleman comes in looking for an engagement ring, and you can just see the love in his eyes. He could be 25, or in his 50s, but the butterflies are the same. He wants to get the best he can for the woman he loves, and he gets teary, and we get teary. I’m tearing up right now,” she says with a laugh. 

“It doesn’t matter whether you have $1,500 in your pocket or you have $50,000—everybody gets the same personalized attention.” Although the Twarowskis trade gems globally, Tatiana considers the Bay Road store a neighborhood business. She and Greg live blocks away. She keeps a pair of heels in the car so that she can segue instantly from a soccer/crew/volleyball/tennis mom of three to a personal jewelry consultant. 

Tatiana loves sharing in joyous occasions across the lifespan: parents buying birthstones and graduation bracelets, women marking milestones and promotions with new earrings, grandparents refurbishing heirlooms for a new generation. Sometimes the Twarowskis use their connections to sell vintage jewelry, but Tatiana also recalls helping a matriarch transform one antique necklace into five modern ones for her five modern granddaughters. 

Those original customers with butterflies in their stomachs return for anniversary “upgrades,” too. “We’re very good at finding large diamonds, one of a kind,” says Tatiana. She and Greg discuss cut, color, clarity. “Once clients understand the differences, they can make an educated decision.” 

And there’s always a box of tissues nearby for the happy tears.
