Suzanne Sherman Appointed Provost And VP For Academic Affairs
October 26, 2020 – Sarasota
Suzanne Sherman Ph.D., was appointed Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs at New College of Florida on October 2, 2020. She is an associate professor of chemistry who joined the faculty of New College in 1989, following a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship appointment at Harvard University. Sherman served as associate provost from 2018 to 2020, chair of the faculty from 2013 to 2016, and chair of the Natural Sciences Division from 1999 to 2002. She replaces Dr. Barbara Feldman, who served as New College’s provost for the past three years.
“New College offers a distinctive academic program, characterized by close faculty-student interaction and a curriculum that encourages intellectual exploration and personal development,” Sherman said. “I look forward to continuing to work with our faculty, students and staff to provide the best possible education for our current and future students.”
In her new role, she plans to focus on enhancing the student learning experience, more closely integrating academic programs and career planning, and continuing to expand the curriculum with new courses and program offerings. Last year, she oversaw the creation of the SET SAIL First-Year Seminar program.
“Provost Sherman has been a steadfast advocate for students,” President Donal O’Shea said. “She is a very fine scientist, a highly respected member of our faculty, and an effective administrator. She brings tremendous professional experience and institutional knowledge to her new role as our chief academic officer.”
Sherman has taught inorganic and biological inorganic chemistry. Her research interests include synthetic modeling of metalloprotein active sites, interactions of metals with biological ligands, and metals in medicine. Sherman earned her B.S. degree summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Albany and her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
