STRIVE Awards Celebrate Student Resilience

Sixty-two high school juniors and seniors were applauded by over 300 guests at the 21st annual STRIVE awards lunch, hosted by the
Education Foundation of Sarasota County (EFSC) on April 23, 2019, at Michael’s on East.

The annual event celebrates juniors and seniors in the Sarasota County Schools (SCS) seven district high schools who have demonstrated resilience and grit to overcome extraordinary challenges in school and their personal lives to make significant improvements in their strive for success.

Chosen by teachers, counselors and principals, the 35 seniors received $2,000 each to assist in their postsecondary education. One senior from each school was named a Senior Strive Scholar and exchanged the first award for a $5,000 award presented by the principals. Recipients of the $5,000 award were:

Junior STRIVE students received award certificates and gift cards. All STRIVE recipients were presented with a book signed by the author, Ned Grossman, titled: “How to Succeed in the 21st Century: Focus on the Things Over Which You have Input, Impact and Control.”  

Jennifer Vigne, EFSC president, announced STRIVE recipients and presented awards. Others making remarks were Britt Riner, EFSC board chair; Kent Hayes, EFSC board member and STRIVE Awards committee chair; and Todd Bowden, SCS superintendent.

The STRIVE program was founded by H. Jack Hunkele and is made possible through the generosity of The Hunkele Family Foundation and Northern Trust, with additional support from the Annette J. Hagens Memorial Foundation and the Evalyn Sadlier Jones Foundation.
