State-Of-The-Art Technology Restores Smiles for World Class Dentistry Patients
Dr. Burr Bakke, a dental implantologist and co-owner of World Class Dentistry® in Sarasota, has taken a fully guided approach to smile restoration.
For the past year, Dr. Bakke has been using state-of-the-art computer-generated technology to create custom smiles for his patients. Through the use of fully-guided surgery, Dr. Bakke is able to give his patients a new fixed set of teeth the day of surgery.
“They get this absolutely incredibly designed smile the way they want it,” Dr. Bakke says. “We want our patients to look as good as they can.”
The journey to a new smile begins with a single computerized tomography or CT scan in Dr. Bakke’s office. With the aid of the scan, Dr. Bakke is able to determine the patient’s bone levels through images of the skull and jaw and create a milled model and a surgical guide.
“He’s not planning from impressions which have inaccuracies,” says Dr. Jill Morris, an accredited cosmetic dentist who co-owns World Class Dentistry with her husband, Dr. Bakke. “He’s planning all of the surgery on the actual skull of the person virtually through the digital CT scan.”
During the surgery, which lasts about one-and-one-half hours for a single arch, the surgical guide is inserted, and from there, Dr. Bakke is able to place the implants where he wants them using correct angulations and depths. The fixed teeth, which are made prior to the surgery, are then screw-attached directly into the implants.
Following surgery, patients eat a soft diet for three months before returning to Dr. Bakke’s office to receive their final set of porcelain teeth. The entire process from the digital CT scan, surgery and the final porcelain teeth are all done at World Class Dentistry.
“The patients and I get to plan it all from start to finish,” Dr. Bakke says. “Then they get to leave with a great smile.”
Fully guided surgery is recommended for patients who are wearing dentures or who are about to lose all of their teeth and don’t want dentures.
“The nice thing about fully guided surgery is that it’s a complete surgery,” Dr. Bakke says.
“Much like a pilot practices flying with a flight simulator, I complete the surgery twice on the digital scan of the patient’s jaws prior to the real surgery. This helps the surgery appointment go as smoothly and seamlessly as possible.”
Dr. Bakke has performed many comprehensive full-mouth reconstructions involving fitting a top and a bottom set of teeth concurrently.
“Getting the teeth and a permanent smile the same day as surgery — that’s like a miracle,” Dr. Morris says.
