SMH Appoints Breast Program Director for New Cancer Institute

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is pleased to announce the appointment of surgical oncologist Russell Novak, MD, FACS, as its Breast Program Director for the hospital’s new Cancer Institute. 

A board-certified general surgeon with specialized expertise in the treatment of benign tumors and malignancies of the breast, Dr. Novak has practiced in Sarasota since 1986 and held multiple leadership positions at Sarasota Memorial over the years, including serving on the Medical Executive Committee and as past Chief of Surgery. His breadth of experience encompasses the entire spectrum of general surgery and surgical oncology. 

Dr. Novak has a long-standing commitment to bringing the best care to patients in the state of Florida and this community. He has been the leading breast cancer surgeon in the Sarasota community for more than 30 years. 

As director of the Sarasota Memorial Cancer Institute Breast Program, Dr. Novak will lead a multidisciplinary team of community breast oncology specialists and surgeons responsible for establishing care pathways and implementing the latest innovations in breast cancer treatment.

The Cancer Institute is developing comprehensive programs around major tumor sites, such as Breast, and is expanding with premier facilities being built to house services across the entire continuum of cancer care – from prevention, screening and diagnosis to the latest treatments, clinical trials and lifetime follow-up, survivorship care and support. 

In addition to providing a complete range of breast care services and diagnostic technology, the Cancer Institute Breast Program promotes better patient outcomes through:

  • A collaborative team-approach to provide a complete care plan and ensure the most effective treatment options for breast cancer patients.
  • Access to cancer clinical trials 
  • Prevention and early detection programs, cancer education, and integrated patient support services, including 1-on-1 help and guidance from specialized breast nurse navigators.
