Selby Gardens’ Compromise Master Plan Recently Finalized
By Sarasota Scene |
Thorough analysis by the City of Sarasota’s Development Review Committee, and our virtual Planning Board hearings have officially been set for Tuesday, September 22 and Wednesday, September 23 starting at 1:30 p.m. each day (the second date will only be utilized if needed). Please feel free to mark your calendar and tune in to these public hearings online. We expect the City Commission hearings to follow in November/December and will keep you informed. Last year we listened to 40 hours of public testimony on our project – ranging from City Commissioners and Planning Board members to neighbors and community residents. We also held countless meetings to garner feedback. As a result, we have made key compromises to address compatibility, noise, and traffic concerns — including the following:Selby Gardens has secured $35 million in private funds restricted solely to the implementation of this Master Plan. In the wake of the pandemic, the construction jobs and economic impact created by the project will give the local economy a much needed boost as the challenges for our community continue. The wide-ranging effects of COVID-19 have also emphasized the importance of bayfront sanctuaries like ours that can provide outdoor refuge and respite, while underscoring the ever present need to safeguard our site from hurricanes and sea-level rise for the generations to come. We look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to move ahead with the goal of realizing this vital vision for Selby Gardens’ future in Downtown Sarasota. In the meantime, I send you and your loved ones all my best wishes for health and safety during these unprecedented times. |
