May 24, 2023 – Sarasota
The William G. and Marie Selby Foundation is awarding 45 graduating high school students with scholarships to support their four undergraduate years of college.
This year’s “Selby Scholars” includes 24 first generation students, those who represent the first in their families to go to college.
In total, $887,000 has been approved by the Foundation for Selby Scholars and institutional grants this year. “Selby Scholars exemplify our Foundation’s values with excellence, and they do so with compassion for others and a determination to better our community,” said Kiarra Womack, Selby Foundation Scholarships and Special Projects Manager.
Majors students have selected include sciences (Electrical Engineering, Nursing, Aerospace Engineering, Medical Health Sciences, Computer Science, and Environmental Engineering, for example); Business Administration; Criminology; Advertising; Graphic Design; and others.
More than half of the 2023 Selby Scholars are from Sarasota County, with additional students from Charlotte, DeSoto and Manatee counties. Most students will attend in-state colleges and universities, though five scholars have chosen out-of-state schools.
In addition to the scholarships awarded directly by the Foundation, universities, vocational schools and colleges will receive $231,000 in institutional grants for educational scholarships offered to their students.
