September 16 – Sarasota
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) embarks on a year-long celebration of its 65th anniversary on Sept. 17. The Florida Legislature established Manatee Junior College, later known as Manatee Community College and now SCF, on Sept. 17, 1957. This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the past and look ahead to a future of boldly leading as an economic engine and cultural enhancer for the community.
SCF President Dr. Carol F. Probstfeld sees the milestone anniversary as an opportunity to reaffirm the pivotal role the college has held for decades, while looking forward to advancing SCF’s 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, focused on opportunity, growth, quality and diversification.
“I am honored to serve as SCF’s president as we reach this historic milestone that highlights the longevity of our service and impact on the region,” Dr. Probstfeld said. “We are upholding a long legacy of being the first choice for higher education, cultural enrichment, employment and philanthropy. At SCF, we meet you where you are. We’re everyone’s college.”
SCF has more than 55,000 alumni and a tradition of offering a full college experience that includes athletics, student clubs and organizations, fine and performing arts, an honors program and student-centered academics. The college has adapted throughout the years, completing strategic growth initiatives and adjusting degree offerings to meet local workforce needs.
Students at SCF can earn two- and four-year degrees, workforce certificates and several non-credit credentials. Classes with flexible start dates, online learning, and evening and weekend classes all serve to create opportunities for everyone, from dual-enrolled high school students to working adults, to conveniently and affordably further their education.
