SCF Awarded Federal Child Care Grant
August 10, 2022 – Bardenton
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will receive $581,000 over the next four years as part of the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education. The funding is designated to alleviate the financial burden on parents with young children who are pursuing a college degree, improving the likelihood of academic success.
The grant will be co-administered by SCF and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Up to 88 students will benefit from the federal funds over the next four years, with funding for an additional 32 students supplied by the Community Foundation, for a total impact on 120 students. The students receiving financial assistance will receive vouchers to use at area childcare centers. SCF will support the recipients with its full complement of student support services, including college and career success coaches, assistance navigating the financial aid process, and referrals to additional community and government resources.
“SCF is excited to create a strong network of support for our student parents,” said Brittany Nielsen, vice president of student services and enrollment management. “The financial resources and community partnerships will provide opportunities for parents to further their careers, improve their earning potential, and experience the pride associated with earning a degree while showing their children the value of higher education.”
“By joining forces to support parents on their educational pathway, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and State College of Florida are helping to disrupt the cycle of generational poverty, strengthen families, and fuel our overall economy,” said Kirsten Russell, vice president, community impact at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. “For the past 10 years we’ve been incredibly focused on helping children by supporting the adults in their lives, and SCF is a key partner in our two-generation learning initiatives.”
Students or prospective students interested in applying for CCAMPIS funding should contact Odia Richardson, CCAMPIS grant coordinator, at RicharO@SCF.edu or 941-752-5157.
