SCD Welcomes St Pete-Based Artist Heidi Brewer

Sarasota Contemporary Dance is thrilled to continue its In-Studio Performance Series, featuring a new lineup of artists this Spring! Performances will take place at SCD’s Home Studio starting in February through May 2022. SCD’s In-Studio Performance Series is an incubation platform for artists at varying stages in their careers. Conceived by Artistic Director Leymis Bolaños Wilmott to provide creators a nurturing and formative artistic opportunity, artists receive access to SCD’s Home Studio and its resources. Whether they’re showing a work-in-progress or adding the final touches to a developed work, the residency culminates in a live performance followed by a Q&A with the featured artist.

SCD is thrilled to be welcoming St-Pete based artist Heidi Brewer for its In-Studio Performance Series! As a project based dancer for SCD during its 14th season, Heidi is excited to be returning to Sarasota to present her work titled hot walk.  Previously performed as a traveling outdoor piece, Heidi is reconstructing hot walk for SCD’s Home Studio space by playing with interactive and non-stationary concepts, experimenting with how the audience experiences a traveling piece.

This work explores these strategies, as well as questions about centrifugal force, momentum, and its interrupters: how much pattern recognition is needed to give way to predictability?; when do we settle into cycles and when do we resist them? Hot walk is inspired by concentricity, cadence, going against the clock and its natural cycle, fashion shows, scrimmages, spectacles, phases, and life-sustaining cycles that happen whether they are witnessed or not.

“As an independent solo artist, it means the world to be able to have opportunities to show my work,” says Heidi Brewer. “I loved the freedom I’ve been given by SCD to try new ideas and explore choreographic instincts outside the box of traditional concert dance.” Heidi continues, “The staff of SCD has been immensely helpful and encouraging in my journey to see this vision through, and the structure of the In-Studio Performance Series allows me to flourish in my artistry.”
