Sarasota Teacher Presents at Global IB Conference

Dr. Todd Brown, PhD., Sarasota Military Academy (SMA) Outreach Director,
was recently invited to speak at the 2019 Global IB Conference held in New Orleans. The theme of the conference was “Generation IB” where educators from around the world gather to showcase collaborative skills and innovative ideas surrounding the mission of International Baccalaureate programs. During the conference, Dr. Brown led a breakout session with schools around the world to join The Inspire Project as well as the “Operation Outbreak” project, a program of Dr. Brown’s creation that puts students at the forefront of containing an infectious disease outbreak. The
project will simultaneously aid researchers in determining how well the public would respond to a real-life pandemic. “Presenting during the annual Global IB Conference is an incredible honor and I am proud to
represent Sarasota Military Academy throughout this experience,” said Sarasota Military Academy Outreach Director Dr. Todd Brown, PhD. “Being invited to meet and network with IB practitioners from around the world is an incredible opportunity to share what I’ve created through the Inspire Project while learning about new opportunities and ideas for our cadets and staff at SMA.” Through a partnership and collaborative efforts with Dr. Brown, Dr. Pardis Sabeti, a genetics professor at Harvard University and Andres Colubri, MFA, Ph.D., a computational researcher in Dr. Sabeti’s lab, the team has created a module for schools around the world to utilize and
study. “Presenting about the ‘Operation Outbreak’ project is an experience I don’t take lightly, as I know that this has the opportunity to change the way we look at STEM programs in our schools and also how we react to global pandemic,” said Dr. Brown. “I am excited to work with cadets and staff at SMA to find new ways to have a local and global impact as we continue pushing boundaries and creating change.”
