Sarasota Orchestra Adds OJB Landscape Architecture to Music Center Design Team
December 6, 2024 | Sarasota
Sarasota Orchestra has selected OJB Landscape Architecture to lead the landscape design for the Music Center at 5701 Fruitville Road.
The firm will collaborate with design architect William Rawn Associates and executive architect HKS to integrate architecture and landscape throughout the 32-acre site, transforming the Music Center into a vibrant destination that supports community connections and social wellness.
Founded in 1989, OJB is a nationally recognized landscape architecture firm with six offices across the United States – Boston, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Philadelphia and San Diego. Dedicated to enhancing the human experience, the team specializes in transforming public spaces to create meaningful connections between people and nature. Notable projects include Klyde Warren Park, home of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Sundays, and Gene Leahy Mall at The RiverFront, which was named Fast Company’s “Best Urban Design Project for 2024” and is where the Omaha Symphony frequently performs.
“Our board has always envisioned the Music Center as more than just a building – it is about the entire site,” said Sarasota Orchestra Board Chair Tom Koski. “With OJB onboard, our project team can work together to create thoughtfully designed spaces that fully support the mission and programs of the Music Center, making it a true community destination for residents and visitors alike.”
OJB has received over 150 national and international awards, including four Urban Land Institute Open Space Awards in a global competition of the best public spaces. OJB is known for its evidence-based approach that respects natural ecologies and incorporates active learning to continually refine its work. The firm strives to secure input and feedback, ensuring that each project reflects the unique character of its location. The team assigned to design Sarasota Orchestra’s Music Center landscape includes partner Chip Trageser, principal Allison Harvey and principal of public realm strategies Tara Green.
“We are thrilled to be part of this project, which embodies a forward-thinking vision for Sarasota-Manatee, focused on long-term growth and sustainability,” said Trageser. “By creating a space that evolves with the community, we are aiming to establish a lasting destination that enriches the region for generations. The integration of music and landscape also offers a unique opportunity to enhance emotional well-being and strengthen human connections across the community.”
OJB has begun collaborating with other project partners to ensure landscape design plays a key role in shaping the architectural vision. This includes the integration of natural elements − such as plants, water and terrain − to create an environment that complements the architecture.
“One of the things that sets OJB apart is the team’s commitment to collaboration, which will be essential to the success of this project,” said Joseph McKenna, president & CEO of Sarasota Orchestra. “We have assembled an exceptional team of consultants whose blended expertise will ensure the Music Center meets the diverse needs of the community, enriches the cultural fabric of Sarasota-Manatee and creates a welcoming environment for all.”
Next, OJB will conduct a comprehensive site assessment to guide the landscape design, evaluating factors such as soil, vegetation and regional history, with a particular focus on water management. As the project moves forward, the firm will prioritize sustainability and functionality to create a flexible environment that can evolve with the community’s changing needs, ensuring the Music Center grows with Sarasota for years to come.
