The Sarasota Military Officers Foundation awarded $48,000 in scholarships at their annual SCHOLARS Dinner at The Bird Key Yacht Club on Friday May 10th, $26,000 earmarked for graduating seniors from our local high schools and $22,000 earmarked for veterans’ scholarships. The checks were presented by Rear Admiral Brian McCarthy USN(Ret), the Executive Director, and Mrs. Clare Power, Scholarship Committee Chair.
Veteran scholarships were provided to returning veterans needing financial assistance attending the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, State College of Florida, Manatee Technical College, and SE Guide Dogs, for a veteran service or therapy dog. Both JROTC and merit scholarships were given to seniors at Riverview, Sarasota, Venice, Booker, Pine View, Cardinal Mooney, and the Sarasota Military Academy high schools.
The keynote speaker was Mayor Liz Alpert, Mayor of the City of Sarasota, who gave an inspiring speech on her challenges to earn her law degree and running for elected office. Chloe Conboy, Congressman Vern Buchanan’s representative, presented the Congressman’s personal recognition of the Foundation’s support and contribution to our community’s veterans, youth, and patriotic events sponsored for the community.
The Foundation’s next big event is on February17th, 2020 President’s Day at Patriot Plaza, at the Sarasota National Cemetery, where there will be a repeat performance of “Celebrating The Stars & Stripes” with the Pops Orchestra and the many faces of Old Glory by Vane Scott.
