Sarasota Crew Athletes on World Stage

Three Sarasota Crew Pre-Elite athletes were named to the USrowing Senior National Team at the conclusion of the USRowing Senior Trials III in Princeton, NJ on July 10, 2019. Cara Stawicki, Rosa Kemp, and Jessica Hyne-Dolan will represent the U.S. at the 2019 World Rowing Championships August 25-September 1 in Linz, Austria. Sarasota Crew athletes claimed three of the nine women’s lightweight spots for Worlds. The Sarasota/GMS Rowing composite crew of Cara Stawicki and Margaret Bertasi won their race in the lightweight women’s pair crossing the line 1.23 seconds ahead of second place. The BIAC/GMS/Sarasota composite crew of Mary Reckford, Rosa Kemp, Michaela Copenhaver, and Jessica Hyne-Dolan won the final in the lightweight women’s quad. crossing the line 4.17 seconds ahead of the second-place crew.

Laura Brown-Corbett, Beverley Gallie, Anne Marichal, and Karen Wiegandt participated in the Henley Masters Regatta on July 12-13, 2019 on River Thames by the town of Henley-on-Thames, England. The 26th annual event attracted 1056 competitors from 161 clubs from 15 different countries. The Sarasota Crew athletes won the Women’s Masters B4x with a time of 3:43.

Sarasota Crew had 11 athletes at the 2019 U19 National Selection Camp-, the U19 Men’s Selection Camp in Chula Vista, CA and the U19 Women’s Selection Camp in New London, CT. The top rowers and coxswains in the country competed with the goal of representing the USA on the Under 19 National Team racing at the Junior World Championships in Tokyo, Japan August 7-11. The athletes who were not selected to race at the Junior World Championships represented the USA at the 2019 CanAmMex Regatta July 13-14 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, FL.

Sarasota Crew athletes Camille Edwards, Ailbhe O’Grady, Marlon Bayer, Malakai Leon, and Bennett Rossell were selected out of their respective U19 Selection Camps to represent the United States at the 2019 CanAmMex Regatta on July 13-14 at Nathan Benderson Park. The CanAmMex Regatta brings together each country’s top developmental junior athletes, coxswains, and coaches for high-level annual competition. Camille Edwards and Ailbhe O’Grady won gold in the Women’s 8+ and the Women’s 4+. Bennett Rossell won gold in the Men’s 8+ and Men’s 4+. Malakai Leon competed in the Men’s 2x and Men’s 4x, finishing first in both races. Marlon Bayer took home the gold in the Men’s 8+ and bronze in Men’s 2-.

At the conclusion of the U19 Selection Camp, six Sarasota Crew athletes were named to the USA Under 19 National Team racing at the World Junior Regatta. Julia Braz, Owen Corr, Alexander DeGrado, Malakai Leon, Harrison Schofield, and Angela Szabo will be representing the USA in Tokyo, Japan August 7-11. Sarasota Crew Head Coach, Casey Galvanek, is the Men’s Junior National Team Head Coach and will be coaching the Junior Men’s Single and the Junior Men’s Four.
