Sarasota Contemporary Dance Kicks Off Its Spring Series

By  |

January 19, 2022 – Sarasota

Sarasota Contemporary Dance is thrilled to continue its In-Studio Performance Series, featuring a new lineup of artists this Spring! Performances will take place at SCD’s Home Studio starting in February through May 2022. SCD’s In-Studio Performance Series is an incubation platform for artists at varying stages in their careers. Conceived by Artistic Director Leymis Bolaños Wilmott to provide creators a nurturing and formative artistic opportunity, artists receive access to SCD’s Home Studio and its resources. Whether they’re showing a work-in-progress or adding the final touches to a developed work, the residency culminates in a live performance followed by a Q&A with the featured artist.

To begin its Spring 2022 In-Studio Performance Series, SCD is welcoming its very own Raychel Ceciro and Eugenia Titterington, presenting a brand new work-in-progress titled CO2 + H20  The Dying Reefs + You! Raychel Ceciro (General Manager of SCD) and Eugenia Titterington (SCD Company Member) will be collaborating to take the audience on a journey to study the depths of the ocean, exploring the similarities of human kind’s destructive tendencies towards both itself and the natural world. SCD is excited to present Ceciro and Titterington after their critically acclaimed performance Make Thee an Ark at Selby Botanical Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point campus, which was named by the Herald Tribune as one of the top 10 performances in Sarasota to see this past fall.

Inspired by deteriorating coral ecosystems and Ceciro’s experience with intimate partner violence, CO2 + H2O is a multimedia movement performance exploring the hollowing effects of patriarchal violence on climate change and the human body. This work studies the profoundly similar effects of trauma at the chemical and molecular levels, found in both damaged coral ecosystems and the body in trauma. Devised through movement, text, and organic chemistry, the piece is a reframing and re-presentation of trauma through a lens of kinship with the natural world — a kinship brought on by the immediacy of demise under a violent patriarchal ontology.

Tickets are available now! In-Person and Virtual Stream options are available for this performance.
