Sarasota-based Communications Firm Creates Training Program for Virtual Presenters

After sitting through more than her share of boring Zoom presentations, communications expert Joan Lowery decided to do something about it. She knew that virtual meetings can be engaging. That’s the reason she created Virtually Speaking—a program that teaches the fine art of creating first-rate virtual presentations. And Lowery knew exactly what that would take. It’s her business, after all.

Lowery, who heads up the Sarasota-based Lowery Communications, has more than 30 years experience working as a professional communicator both domestically and internationally. Her expertise spans the fields of training, instructional design, broadcast and print journalism, television producing, acting, and counseling.

Lowery realized that skill set was exactly what online presenters needed to master. “The techniques of professional broadcasters can be easily adapted for online presentations,” she says. “With practice, we can all become skilled online communicators.”

According to Lowery, there’s no way to avoid online meetings in today’s world. That ship has definitely sailed.
“Pandemic or no pandemic, remote meetings are here to stay,” says Lowery. “There’s never been a better time to invest in training and the right equipment to deliver stellar virtual presentations.” Lowery adds that a host of verbal and nonverbal issues consistently compromise many online presentations. These include poor lighting, unappealing backgrounds, lack of eye contact, awkward body language, and poor audio quality. “Most of these problems have easy, affordable solutions,” she says. “That’s what Virtually Speaking is all about.”
Lowery offers these training and coaching sessions to businesses, non-profits, and individuals throughout the country. It’s not a one-size-fits all approach.
“The training I offer depends on the client’s unique needs,” she says. “I train people in staging, vocal, verbal and visual delivery, and camera awareness. Each skill is always a means to an end—creating online experiences that are entertaining, inspiring and substantive.”
