The Safe Children Coalition is honored to announce that they have received a grant of $25,000 from the Roberta Levethal Sudakoff Foundation. This grant will provide funding for the Sarasota Youth Shelter and its programming.
Charles Harris, Director of Residential Programs said, “The funds that we received from The Roberta Leventhal Foundation is a true blessing and will go a long way in helping the SCC Shelter provide youth and families with the best service possible. Thank you for pouring love into the shelter so we can continue to pour love into the community.”
Since 1991, the Sarasota Youth Shelter has addressed the needs of thousands of youth and families. The Youth Shelter serves a target population of youth ages 10 to 17 in Sarasota and DeSoto Counties who are either homeless, have run away, are ungovernable, truant, at risk of becoming homeless and/or have been abused or abandoned and are awaiting placement within the foster care system. All youth are accepted regardless of their point of origin, including from other Florida counties as well as out of state. While some of the youth have been court ordered to stay at the Shelter, others may enter on their own, at their parent’s request, or are referred by community organizations and systems. Youth typically stay at the shelter for 10 to 14 days. Some of the youth are admitted to the Shelter multiple times for different reasons. All services are provided free of charge to each client in need. Funding will be used to help support the Sarasota Youth Shelter’s efforts to continue providing services to youth in need with the intent to increase young people’s safety, social and emotional well-being and self-sufficiency, while building permanent connections with families, communities, schools and other positive social networks.
