Forty Carrots Fuels Strategic Growth Amidst Rising Child Welfare Need

The majority of children in Sarasota and Manatee counties begin their lives at a disadvantage and one organization caring for these families has a new opportunity to address their needs.

“Despite serving more than 2,400 families last year, we still had to turn away over 400 families because we are operating at capacity,” said Michelle Kapreilian, Forty Carrots Family Center CEO.

Poverty and early traumatic experiences make a child more likely to experience damaging developmental effects and physical and mental health issues. Locally 52 percent of babies are born into poverty, according to data from First 1,000 Days Sarasota County, a local initiative dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of mothers and babies.

“For all families, access to high quality parenting education, mental health services, and early education can mitigate negative outcomes caused by toxic stress, poverty, abuse, and other adverse environments,” Kapreilian said.

In response, a flexible $300,000 grant from the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation has positioned Forty Carrots to increase services for families in Sarasota and Manatee counties with programs that have proven, lifelong positive effects.

“As we celebrate a milestone of helping more than 40,000 families since our founding, we are well positioned to meet the growing needs of our community. This partnership with the Barancik Foundation comes at a defining moment for Forty Carrots and will support new programs, staffing, and enhancements as needed to fill critical demand,” says Kapreilian.

Over the next three years, the organization will be taking a strategic look at the community’s needs and develop an action plan in order to expand their services and pursue other opportunities for growth.

“The whole community benefits from investing in early childhood programs,” says Teri A Hansen, President | CEO of Barancik Foundation. “Forty Carrots’ programs provide our most vulnerable, and our community, with better educational outcomes, improved health, greater economic growth and a civically engaged community.”

The Patterson Foundation Matches Over $190,000 in Nonprofit Earned-Income Plan Investments

The Foundation matched contributions made toward the startup costs of plans developed by each nonprofit participating in its Margin & Mission Ignition initiative

The Patterson Foundation matched more than $190,000 in contributions toward the entrepreneurial endeavors of the five regional nonprofits participating in its Margin & Mission Ignition initiative. The match will help to cover the startup costs of each organization’s earned-income plan developed through their participation in Margin & Mission Ignition, which will be used to generate revenue that increases their capacity to serve the community.

The Patterson Foundation created Margin & Mission Ignition five years ago to help nonprofits in our region adopt and implement earned-income strategies, giving them the opportunity to build entrepreneurial capacity and strengthen mission impact. Throughout a 30-month process, each organization receives extensive guidance from No Margin, No Mission, a social enterprise and national consulting firm engaged by The Patterson Foundation. The 15 organizations participating in previous iterations of Margin & Mission Ignition have collectively generated more than $5.8 million in revenue through 18 different earned-income ventures.

“Margin & Mission Ignition has served as a catalyst for nonprofits developing alternate revenue streams for greater thrivability,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “With this match, The Patterson Foundation affirmed their business-planning, while sparking investor interest to propel them forward and turn these mission-aligned aspirations into reality.”

The following organizations are launching new or expanding existing ventures for their Margin & Mission Ignition earned-income plans:

Beyond the Spectrum: Launching a new onsite Applied Behavioral Analysis Therapy Clinic to provide needed therapy services to more than 100 children with autism and their families who are currently enrolled in school at Beyond the Spectrum.
Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary: Launching a new onsite venue rental business for those who wish to host unique corporate parties, weddings, nonprofit events, and special family gatherings amidst some of nature’s most amazing and rare species of animals.

UnidosNow: Launching a new Affordable College Prep and Career Readiness Services venture that goes beyond the traditional offerings that are currently available from local guidance counselors and independent college advisors.

FST Announces its 2019 Summer Camp

Florida Studio Theatre (FST) is pleased to announce its Summer Camp offerings, featuring workshops covering acting, dance, improv, and voice work, for young people ages 4-17. Led by professional artists, FST’s Summer Camp programming provides youth and teenagers the same level of quality and professionalism that audiences have come to expect from FST on stage. FST’s Summer Camps include three sessions, beginning in May and running through August. A full list of this summer’s offerings is available at floridastudiotheatre.org. Registration is available by calling Pamela Smith, Education Administrator, at (941) 366-1350, or by visiting floridastudiotheatre.org.

“Summer camp at Florida Studio Theatre offers a place where students can come and freely be themselves,” said Christine Hopkins, FST’s Director of Education. “A place where creativity is thriving, laughter is reverberating, and the art of play is practiced universally, as participants revel in the world where young people are meant to be well, exactly that—young people! In this day and age, youth can often feel the pressure to grow up too quickly. At FST, both our students and staff are able to engage in a world that is focused on unapologetic frivolity and effortless joy.”

Studies have shown that young people who participate in the arts tend to have strong emotional intelligence, heightened self-awareness, and often perform well academically. For youth ages 4-6, FST offers Little Theatre, a popular program for young students to explore storytelling while also strengthening their acting, music, and dance skills.

The original and most popular camp experience for over 30 years, FST’s Children’s Performing Arts Camp, lasts 3 weeks, and is open to youth ages 7-12. In this camp, students develop their acting, voice, improvisation, and dance skills in an open and supportive environment. Teaching artists focus on each child’s unique way of expressing him or herself while also helping each child build skills for both on and off the stage. For those who need a shorter commitment, Intro to Theatre: All the World’s a Stage lasts only one week, and introduces youth to FST’s educational philosophy through improv games and movement activities.

Teens will develop, write, and perform their own comedy sketches in Young Performers Company WRITES. For those who want to learn how to be a “triple threat,” there is Teen Broadway Camp: From Hamilton to Shakespeare. In Teen Improvisation, campers will learn how to think on their feet, listen to their partners, and pursue creative inspiration whenever it is sparked. Teens interested in cultivating a variety of creative skills will excel in FST’s Teen Performing Arts Camp, where they will delve into the world of acting, voice work, improv, and dance. One of FST’s most special summer programs, the Young Performers Company, works in conjunction with FST’s VIP Camp, a program for individuals with mental and physical disabilities. Teens who take part in the Young Performers Company will devise and perform their own sketch comedy show, learning how to develop memorable characters and collaborate with others along the way.
