National security officials, at an increasingly alarming rate, are warning of the growing threats posed by certain video-sharing social media sites. New College of Florida has been monitoring developments regarding the social media app TikTok and several other apps.
It is known that TikTok harvests vast amounts of data from its users, much of which has no legitimate connection to the app’s supposed purpose of video sharing. By using the app, you are agreeing to allow TikTok to collect sensitive information such as keystroke patterns/rhythms and biometric identifiers such as facial recognition, fingerprints, and voice prints. The collection of this type of information far exceeds the standard collection of browsing history or device types that other social media providers collect.
At last Tuesday’s meeting of the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida, the governors approved an emergency regulation to accelerate implementation of proposed Regulation 3.0075, allowing the system’s Chancellor to block access to websites and social media platforms deemed to threaten personal privacy and national security. The emergency regulation follows a national trend to ban TikTok and other high-risk software applications. Starting today, April 4, 2023, New College of Florida will take measures to ban the use of the following apps on college owned devices and networks.
- TikTok
- Tencent QQ
- WeChat
- Vkontakte
- Kaspersky
- Fizz
