June 18, 2021 – Sarasota
New College of Florida has appointed Marjorie Thomas as its new Vice President for Student Affairs, effective August 15, 2021. She will oversee Housing & Residential Life, Student Activities & Campus Engagement, the Counseling & Wellness Center, the Student Success Program, Student Disability Services and Student Conduct Services for New College’s student population.
“Marjorie brings to New College a breadth of student affairs experience in academic enrichment, student engagement, diversity and inclusion, and accessibility services,” said New College President Donal O’Shea. “She will play a vital role in re-establishing a flourishing campus experience for our students, whose lives have been upended this past year by the ongoing challenges of COVID-19.”
Thomas, who has been Dean of Students at the College of William & Mary since 2013, previously served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at the College of Charleston for six years. She also worked at the University of Miami beginning in 1995 as the Assistant Director and Coordinator of Minority Recruitment. Two years later, she became the Associate Director of Multicultural Student Affairs before finally becoming the University Ombudsman and Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs.
“There is no doubt that the unique approach to education and the student experience is valued at New College,” Thomas said. “I look forward to helping the university grow and achieve its priorities, while building on the distinctive features that have enabled it to thrive as a public liberal arts college.”
Thomas holds a J.D. from Florida A&M College of Law, an M.Ed. from the University of Georgia and a B.A. from Florida International University. She will replace Randy Harrell who has served in the role on an interim basis since 2019.
