Women On The Scene
Meme Signor
Board Member at JoshProvides Epilepsy Assistance Foundation, Inc.
“Having a son with epilepsy, I’m very passionate about advocating for him until he’s old enough to advocate for himself,” says Meme Signor. Her son, Chase, experienced his first seizure at just five years old.
Reflecting on her journey to becoming a board member with JoshProvides Epilepsy Assistance Foundation, she recalls speaking to both CEO Andria Bilan and co-founder Sandra Chapnick with her late husband Bruce Chapnick. “The mission of JoshProvides is to improve the lives of those living with epilepsy and other seizure disorders,” she says. JoshProvides offers support at many levels: an epilepsy support group, education and awareness, medical services, seizure alert and detection devices, seizure response dog, and transportation and travel.” Every dollar raised truly benefits the epilepsy community,” she says.
“One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime,” Meme says, explaining that not all seizures are the same. “Because it is so common, people need to know that there is support right here in Sarasota, and that there are organizations wherever you are that are able to help you.”
In 2021, Meme partnered with JoshProvides to organize the Chase Away Epilepsy Walk, in honor of her son, Chase, who is now 15. This year marks the fifth annual Chase Away Epilepsy Walk, scheduled for November 2nd at 9:30 a.m. at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton. “We walk to lessen the stigma associated with epilepsy and seizures,” she says. “I want people to be informed and understand that no one should be treated differently because of their condition.”
In addition to local in-person efforts, JoshProvides hosts online support group calls twice a month via Zoom, extending the organization’s reach beyond Florida. Meme advises, “If you’re ever given a diagnosis or labeled with a condition, look for help and community support because it is out there.”
