Katrina Coombs was born in St Andrew, Jamaica, and she lives and works there today. In 2013, through the University of Plymouth, she earned an MFA in Creative Practice from Transart Institute. Coombs has a passion for fiber and an understanding of the sensitivity of threads and fabric, which she uses to bring unique designs and sculptural forms into being.
Her practice employs the use of fiber and the body as she engages the role and existence of women, the M(0)ther and I. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, locally and internationally. Of special note is her first USA solo exhibition: “I M(O)ther: Threads of the Maternal Figure” currently on view at the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College.
Through her art initiative, Blaqmango, Coombs engages the Jamaican and international art scene not only as an artist, but also as a mentor and independent curator. She organizes local exhibitions and residencies as stepping stones and for artist development. She believes that all artists should be true to their creative vision as they pursue their artistic projects and encourages and guides artists on the best ways to follow their dreams while providing them with opportunities to advance their careers.
“I M(O)ther: Threads of the Maternal Figure” is on view at the Sarasota Art Museum through October 2, 2022.
