Meals On Wheels of Sarasota Kicks Off Annual March for Meals
March 2, 2022 – Sarasota
Every year, Meals On Wheels organizations across the country unite for an annual fundraising campaign, “March for Meals” to benefit local programs.
This year’s March for Meals month-long campaign is designed to rally the Suncoast around vulnerable neighbors who rely on this much-needed service. By volunteering, donating or speaking out, the community’s seniors, veterans, and those who are unable to prepare meals for themselves will live healthier independent lives at home, where they want to be.
Throughout the pandemic, Meals On Wheels of Sarasota said “yes” to the Suncoast community, increasing the number of daily meals delivered to its usual clientele plus those Sarasotans isolated or recuperating, and those furloughed without transportation or food. Thanks to community financial support, the organization never said “no” – but the drain on financial reserves has been great. While the pandemic hinders in-person funding events, it is more important than ever to celebrate the power and importance of Meals On Wheels of Sarasota during this unprecedented time. The organization is seeking to raise $200,000 to feed those in need.
“For 51 years, it’s been our joy at Meals On Wheels of Sarasota to serve this community by providing daily nutritious meals to our homebound neighbors unable to provide meals for themselves,” said Meals On Wheels of Sarasota Executive Director Marjorie Broughton. “To this day, our youngest client is now 3 and our oldest is 106.”
More than 800 heart healthy 1,200 calorie meals are prepared fresh daily and delivered five days a week (including holidays), every week. Meal recipients are frequently individuals whose plight is overlooked by society, but who, with meal assistance, can remain safely independent in their homes with relatively minor help. This includes families one paycheck away from losing their residence, pregnant women in need of healthy meals to avoid delivering low birth weight babies and new mothers in need of meals.
