June 17, 2024 | Sarasota

The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program is co-sponsoring a Juneteenth Celebration with local black service organizations. The event will include a food drive give-a-way, and free lunch cookout. The event is open to the public and will be held 10am – 2pm, June 22nd at Mount Raymond Baptist Church, 2410 4th Ave East in Palmetto. Because Juneteenth falls on a Wednesday this year, the event will be on Saturday, June 22nd , giving attendees another chance to celebrate.

The local chapters of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Links, Inc. will serve food. A voter registration team will be on-site to help people sign up to vote, and volunteers will collect banned books. In particular, visitors are encouraged to donate books by Black authors that have been challenged and banned from libraries – from classics like Their Eyes Were Watching God and Native Son to more recent titles such as The Hate U Give and The 1619 Project.

Come and join the celebration! The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program is encouraging the public and local businesses to participate and donate food. Donations can be dropped off prior to the event by contacting Executive Director, Scott Biehler, phone/text: 941-350-6075, e-mail: info@mayorsfeedthehungry.org. Donations may also be dropped off on the day of the event from 10 am till 12 noon.  The food drive give-a-way will begin at 12:30 pm.

There will be a short program at noon with local government leaders, which members of the media are invited to attend and photograph.
