Winners have been selected for the inaugural C. G. Jung Society of Sarasota Image, Archetype and Humanity Award at Ringling College of Art and Design. Senior Lizzie Christie created a design selected by the Jung Society board that will be used in their 2022-23 season print and digital collateral.

“We are excited by this partnership and find working with the students inspiring,” Jung Society of Sarasota Art Coordinator Carol Shore said. “Jungian psychology is grounded in images of the subconscious so seeing the interpretation from the fresh eyes of enterprising students adds meaningful perspective.

”Students were asked to design a look for the project that reflected transformation or “individuation,” as termed by Jung, occurring for both Psyche and Eros. The final piece needed to share the artist’s interpretation of exposure to mythology, even when experienced unconsciously by an individual, can open the journey to the true Self.

Taking first place, Christie’s work will be displayed at the Society’s January event, the second workshop of the 2022-23 series which begins Nov. 11. Her design has already been incorporated into the organization’s website and their event brochure will be mailed to members this week. Christie also earned a $1500 stipend with the win. Cash prizes were also awarded to students for second ($1000) and third place ($500).

Christie was inspired by the trust between characters in the story and worked to portray their story organically.“

The myth of Eros and Psyche is a beautiful story and the image focuses on the trust aspect of the romance between them,” Christie said. “I was working in the style and mood of art nouveau, and wanted to keep the decorative elements of cathedrals, ornamental but organic.”The competition will continue next year, with the contest announced to RCAD students in January and the submission deadline set for Spring.
