Jewish Federation Announces State Million Dollar Funding for Safety and Security
June 14, 2021 – Sarasota
The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $1,000,000 grant in the Florida state budget. The grant, which is earmarked for security needs, was signed and approved by Governor Ron DeSantis on June 2, 2021. State Senator Joe Gruters and State Representative James Buchanan were instrumental as champions of the grant to secure funds for a safe Jewish community.
Funds will be used in two specific ways:
First, with antisemitism on the upswing and white supremacy groups predominant in Florida, the grant will allow for security improvements on the Larry & Mary Greenspon Family Campus for Jewish Life on McIntosh Road. Enhancements such as 24-hour security checkpoints at the entrance and exit, advanced software for efficiently tracking and identifying visitors, adequate outdoor lighting, safe rooms and more will protect the thousands of people (both Jews and non-Jews) who will visit the 33-acre campus each year for programming, Holocaust education, day camp, sports, special events and more.
Second, the funding will allow for the creation of a Training Center to train the community on safety precautions. Federation’s security partner, Secure Community Network (SCN), will assist with centralized security planning as well as training and resources on such subjects as First Aid, CPR and threat awareness. This prevention-based program for schools, health providers, community organizations and other educational partners will ensure our community is prepared and protected.
Board President, Randon Carvel says, “On behalf of the Federation board, we offer our heartfelt appreciation to Senator Joe Gruters and Representative James Buchanan for their ongoing support and leadership to protect our community. Not only will our campus be a safe place to visit, work, learn and play, the Training Center will be a leader in developing a security shield to protect the whole community.”
