Education advocates Joe and Mary Kay Henson have donated over $1M through The Henson Fund, to help fund multiple educational and affordable housing initiatives throughout Sarasota County in 2024.

Their goals are rooted in a fundamental belief: that the most meaningful way to make a difference is by supporting those who need it most, particularly through the transformative power of education. They especially focus on providing aid to Title I schools in the Sarasota County School District, which are, in part, federally assisted to ensure that students meet state academic standards, particularly in reading and math.

“Every child deserves the chance to dream big, realize their potential, and inspire those around them,” said Joe Henson. “Access to literacy and quality educational opportunities are key to a world of possibilities, and by helping to do so, we empower children to shape a future defined by their dreams.”

The Henson Fund’s mission is to help those living in poverty with impactful educational opportunities that are measurable and sustainable, along with a focus on attainable housing for teachers and educators.

Totaling $1,012,609, their donations in 2024 have funded the following programs:

  • Pre-K Backpack Initiative – Sarasota County Schools: $58,300.
  • Booker High School: $24,025.
  • Reading Initiative – USF and Sarasota County Schools 2024/2025: $40,284.
  • University of South Florida (USF) Foundation – Scholarships: $57,600.
  • Pledge with Community Foundation of Sarasota County for Affordable Housing Initiative: $685,000.
  • Season of Sharing: $60,000.
  • The Giving Challenge: $72,400.
  • Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s (CFSC) Leadership and Impact Fund: $15,000.

Sarasota County School District Superintendent Terry Connor said the partnership with the Henson Fund is crucial to providing additional support to students and teachers who need it most. “Sarasota County School District is proud to partner with the Henson Fund, a collaboration that is vital in providing much-needed support to both students and teachers. This partnership allows us to address the needs of those who require it the most, ensuring a brighter future for our community’s learners and leaders,” Connor added.

According to Mary Kay Henson, funding these programs is key to unlocking a brighter future, as literacy provides the foundation for success, opens doors to new opportunities, and empowers children to achieve their full potential.
“By enhancing innovative educational programs and enrichment opportunities for both students and teachers, we can support broader opportunities and a brighter future for the whole community,” she said.
