Safe Children Coalition (SCC), the lead community-based care organization for Florida’s Circuit 12 (Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties), received a grant of $10,000 from Manatee Community Foundation that was initially intended for hurricane relief. However – coincidentally, just in time for the arrival of Hurricane Idalia – the foundation granted permission for the funds to be used for hurricane kits for foster families in Manatee County.
Each of the 100 kits – valued at $100 apiece – includes: an AM/FM portable radio, a fire and waterproof bag for documents, first aid kit, plastic scissors, plastic tweezers, gloves, flashlights, batteries, power bank, rain poncho set for the family, and a portable lantern, all within a reusable grocery bag. WWSB ABC7 also provided 100 copies of its Hurricane Guide to include in each bag.
“For many foster families, funds may be too tight to purchase all of the hurricane supplies they need to keep their families safe,” said Brena Slater, president and CEO of Safe Children Coalition. “We are grateful to Manatee Community Foundation for helping to provide some additional peace of mind for foster parents who have opened their hearts and homes to children in care.”
