Dr. April Glasco
Founder / CEO of Second Chance Last Opportunity (SCLO)
At 23 years old, Dr. April Glasco, founder and CEO of Second Chance Last Opportunity (SCLO) dedicated her life to helping people in need of a second chance, beginning with her own. Since 1995, her compassion has inspired individuals from all walks of life to become more educated and empowered versions of themselves.
“Everyone’s steps are different. Everyone’s fingerprints are different. Everyone comes from a different experience. You must see each person for who they are,” says Dr. April, whose first questions to those who step inside one of SCLO’s purple buildings are, “Have you eaten today? When was the last time you ate?”
“Second Chance Last Opportunity helps people at their immediate need. It provides them with life skills and essential services,” says Marc, a proud intern at the non-profit organization.
In addition to emergency food and services, SCLO offers a wide array of learning and training programs, from reading and culinary training classes to mental health counseling sessions. SCLO transforms thousands of lives each year through its Out of the Box youth program, The Power of Purple life skills classes, The Sister’s Circle Project, and the Women Together We All Win workshops, conferences, and empowerment classes.
Dr. Glasco’s dedication extends beyond the walls of SCLO. She travels globally as a motivational speaker, delivering speeches uniquely tailored to her audience’s needs. Her signature “I am that I am” pledge encourages individuals to see themselves as strong, brilliant, and powerful. As an author of two books, Divine Purpose of Inspiration and You Only Know My Name Not My Story, she affirms, “This is my passion, my purpose, my calling. This is my life. It’s what brings me joy.”
“It’s not how much a person does. It’s the effectiveness of how it’s done,” she adds. A testament to SCLO’s effectiveness in the Sarasota community is that those who receive help often return as volunteers. “Those who come into this building have truly changed their lives.”
