Dick Vitale Awards Scholarships to BGCSDC Club Members

Dick and Lorraine Vitale are long-time supporters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, providing opportunities for Club members to achieve success in higher education. Over the past 23 years, Dick Vitale has awarded scholarships to students chosen by BGCSDC for being outstanding leaders in their local Club and community. 

This year, Dick and Lorraine Vitale presented $1,000 scholarships to five Club members bound for college. “Being a Dick Vitale Scholar is what drives me to continue succeeding in school,” said Axa S., a scholarship recipient. “Knowing others believe in me gives me that extra push whenever I need it. My family and I were truly grateful that I received this scholarship to help further my education and set an example for my two younger siblings.” The awards were presented in the Dick Vitale Sports and Fitness Center at the Lee Wetherington Club. 

Apart from the scholarship recipients, the gymnasium was filled with Club members eager to hear his encouraging words about developing a plan to chase their dreams. The fitness center was named after this sports and philanthropic icon who has been a foundational pillar to helping our youth succeed. Bill Sadlo, President/CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties stated, “Dick Vitale has been a trusted friend and a committed community partner to BGCSDC. We named the Dick Vitale Sports and Fitness Center after an inspirational leader that has remained a constant advocate for our youth. College dreams are now a reality for our Club members because of Dick Vitale’s dedication and support.” Dick and Lorraine’s generosity continues into the holiday season as they sponsor the BGCSDC annual Holiday Party, providing entertainment, a hot holiday meal and gifts for deserving Club members. Dick Vitale continues to motivate the next generation of leaders by his example, and Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties is grateful to have him champion their cause.
