Women On The Scene
Dee Stephenson
MD • Stephenson Eye Associates
Dr. Dee Stephenson wanted to be a doctor since she was five years old. During medical school, one of her mentors inspired her to pursue ophthalmology, and she fell in love with it, eventually becoming an ophthalmic surgeon. Today, she sees about 40 patients daily in her boutique practice in a historic Italian Renaissance building in Venice.
Though Dr. Dee has been practicing for 36 years, she thrives on the rapidly changing technology in her field. She has extensive expertise in micro-incisional cataract surgery, implantation of premium intraocular lenses, and custom laser cataract techniques. She also specializes in glaucoma treatment and dry eye management, employing state-of-the-art technology to provide the most up-to-date options for her patients.
But there’s one day a week she looks forward to more than any other day. “My favorite day of the week is Tuesday because that’s my surgery day,” Dr. Dee says. “I love doing surgery.”
Though some may assume the unpredictable aspect of surgery might be stressful, she thrives on it.
“I prepare for A and B, and sometimes C happens, so we have to learn to change on the cuff if we need to.”
“Surgery day is where I shine, and give each patient the best care possible. It’s often challenging…but to help people see clearly again…it’s so rewarding,” she added.
Dr. Dee says the demand for ophthalmologists is increasing as the population ages. To help answer that demand, she’s involved with two mentorship programs, teaching and guiding residents; the ophthalmologists of the future.
“It’s an exciting time in ophthalmology,” she says. “I’ve had the opportunity to share my knowledge with the next generations of ophthalmologists and be a part of the community where I live and practice. I get to live the life I love.”
