February 15 2021 – Sarasota
On February 11, the students at Hershorin Schiff Community Day School enjoyed the annual Panther Pride / Spirit Day, with various activities to build teamwork and showcase school spirit, with the added bonus of a Valentine’s Day-related “Ahavantine” community service project to help spread some love. (“Ahava” means “love” in Hebrew.)
This year’s community service activity featured the making of “Healthcare Hero Bags” in appreciation of those on the front lines of the pandemic who are working to protect our community from infection and heal those who fall ill. Each of the 150 bags include a handwritten note of thanks from a student, a bottle of water, B12 Emergen-C pack, chocolates, mints, granola bars and more; these were delivered to Sarasota Memorial Hospital by some healthcare heroes who also happen to be parents at Community Day.
The bags were packed by students in grades K-8, in shifts, outside, while masked. Other Panther Pride events included the writing of kind notes to classmates, a teamwork exercise featuring a giant jump rope, and an environmental project to help students understand the dangers of microplastics.
“Our Ahavantine activities are our take on celebrating love, celebrating friendship, and celebrating community,” said Head of School Dan Ceaser. “Our students take such great pleasure and pride in helping others and trying to brighten someone’s day. With COVID-19, our students felt like those on the front lines of the pandemic were most deserving of anything we could do to show our appreciation for all they do.”
