Community Day School Goes Virtual for Educational Showcase

Although the format changed from in-person to virtual this year, Hershorin Schiff Community Day School’s spring “Learning on Display” was an overwhelming success as students gave presentations on classroom projects and showed parents and grandparents their growth as students and citizens.

On May 11, all K-8 classes were livestreamed for family members near and far. Topic areas and activities ranged from environmental stewardship, a modern take on Renaissance art and the Humanistic Movement, and Great Depression poetry, to a celebration of authors, Hebrew singing, and an open mic poetry slam.

Several breakout sessions were offered, providing updates on the school’s new campus (which will be open for the 2021-2022 school year), an overview of project-based learning – the school’s core academic philosophy, and a live Q&A with Head of School Dan Ceaser.

The preschool also participated in the biannual event. Pre-recorded sessions were offered on May 14 as streaming video, to highlight the learning and fun in the youngest classrooms.

“Project-based learning asks students to investigate and solve actual problems and create authentic products that showcase the learning process. We also tie in elements of community service so that our students will become lifelong ambassadors for peace, environmental stewardship and social justice,” Ceaser said. “Even as we changed the format from live to virtual, parents and families remained impressed with the professionalism, composure and knowledge that students displayed as they curated their projects.”

Learning on Display highlights the value of applying learning in a meaningful, relevant and socially constructive context rather than forcing students to sit for state-mandated assessments, where children must absorb and then regurgitate predetermined content. The school’s focus on project-based learning empowers students to investigate and solve actual problems as well as pursue topics that are personally meaningful.
