November 11, 2020 – Sarasota

Carlos Moreira, veteran services administrator at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus, has a busy agenda this week.

First up, on Veterans Day, Moreira has a radio interview scheduled on WCTQ, 92.1 CTQ, to talk about the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus and his work supporting student veterans there. Then on Thursday, he’ll assist veterans during the annual “Paychecks for Patriots” hiring event organized by USF, State College of Florida and CareerSource Suncoast.

This year’s job fair will be held virtually from 2 to 6 p.m. More than 20 companies from the Sarasota-Manatee region are expected in what has become an annual collaboration between the job assistance agency and local colleges.

“I’m very proud of this event because it’s not just a veterans’ event, but it’s also an educational event and a community event,” Moreira said. “It’s designed to help students, veterans and the community. The focus is on helping veterans, but it’s open to anybody.”

Last year’s Paychecks for Patriots at the campus’ Selby Auditorium attracted 40 employers and more than 150 job seekers, including from the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus.

“Veterans and college students bring higher-level skills and dedication to their careers,” said USF Sarasota-Manatee campus Career Services Coordinator Toni Ripo, who is assisting with the event. “The collaboration with CareerSource Suncoast and State College of Florida makes us stronger in helping employers hire this population.”
