Developer and philanthropist Hugh Culverhouse Jr. has donated $50,000 as a matching challenge gift to Resurrection House, a day resource center for the homeless in downtown Sarasota.
The nonprofit, based in the Rosemary District, has served the homeless in Sarasota since 1989 and is committed to transitioning at-risk individuals to a path of self-sufficiency.
Through his gift, Culverhouse is challenging others in the community to give generously, too. Contributions made to Resurrection House through Nov. 30 will be matched dollar for dollar until the $50,000 in matching donations has been reached. Donations to the nonprofit fund everyday necessities that the homeless often lack, such as showers, clothing, meals, laundry, a barber, a doctor and more.
“We’re so grateful for this transformative donation from Mr. Culverhouse,” said Resurrection House Interim Executive Director Mason Ayres. “His matching challenge gift will be a catalyst in inspiring even more giving to our organization. Our donors are instrumental in helping us provide essential services that give our clients a needed sense of hope for the future.”
Resurrection House is funded solely through individuals, businesses, foundations and religious groups. It does not accept funding from city, county, state or federal government, instead relying on the generosity of the community to form the core of its operating budget.
“With no government support whatsoever, it’s great to see the community come together like this to support Resurrection House,” said Board of Directors President Fr. Charleston Wilson, who also serves as Rector of Church of the Redeemer. “Every gift to this organization makes a strong statement that every human being matters. This matching challenge is an exciting opportunity to show how Sarasota is an incredibly caring community.”
